The Art of Project Estimation

Updated: Feb 12

There’s an adage that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Now, imagine trying to do it with a blindfold. You wouldn’t know if you were making progress, how long it would take, and you’d be quickly discouraged. Perhaps you’d even give up. People sometimes worry that a PO to BTP project may feel like the same feat as eating an elephant, blindfolded because there isn't a project estimation. But it doesn't have to be.

Map the Journey

Because you have a legacy environment, migration projects don’t have to be reimplementations to get the most out of BTP and give you the functionality you have in PO. You can do analysis and plan for the new migration. You may still be eating an elephant, but with the FIGAF analysis report, you won’t be doing it blindfolded. Happy Integrations uses this tool as a foundation to provide even more analysis and properly plan migration projects, allowing you to fully utilize artifacts from your legacy environment in your project. This means before your project begins, you can have a plan, subdivided into manageable chunks, and technical challenges will be proactively identified before you have a deadline to meet, letting you breathe easier.

Interfaces can be grouped for efficiency, and interface governance can be applied while moving them to the new BTP environment. This allows you to account for things like alerting, QoS, and better integration tools and patterns available. Without this insight, doing a PO to BTP migration reminds me of Florence Chadwick who tried to swim 26 miles from California to Catalina Island, but because of a thick fog, gave up with less than a mile to go. That is not a situation you want to find yourself in, and it is easy enough to avoid with the right tools and implementation partners.

But, what does this look like…

If you run the migration analysis report from FIGAF, in a few moments you get a report that looks like this:

Which is a great starting point. Its much better than digging in the old PO system and extracting this information manually, which would take a very long time, and wouldn’t be accurate like the automatically extracted data.

At Happy Integrations, we have internal utilities that help refine this analysis further to ensure we are giving you the best BTP project estimation. First, we can identify legacy integration patterns and group related interfaces. We can correctly assess which interfaces will be migrated quickly and which ones will require more effort so we can coordinate with your team and plan accurately. Because we have decades of experience that even AI and automation can’t replace, we then take all these different outputs, and manually analyze the results for good measure. The output is we end up with a high confidence understanding of the legacy environment and step by step approach in a short period of time. This allows us to better share the results of the analysis with you and confirm the best course of action for implementation. Our overall delivery is much more thorough, accurate, and cost-effective, and also allows us to provide client facing tools to report on our progress, giving you the highest quality blend of the best tech and service offerings, such as our progress tracker:

Happy Integrations would be happy to be the deliverer of that for you. If you would like to learn more, please feel free to check out how Happy Integrations, in partnership with FIGAF, can get your BTP migration done fast, easy, and cost-effectively. We would be happy to schedule a 1 hour meeting to go over what to expect with a migration project with us. This can be scheduled by reaching out to info@happyintegrations.work.
